I’ve had a long standing “girl crush” on the runner Kara Goucher; she just seems like a good person, like someone I would want to be friends with. She made the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon team today (!), and while reading about the Trials online, I came across this interview. It’s inspiring on multiple levels.
I think we all become complacent at times, and I’ve certainly rationalized away my fair share of subpar performances in life. I didn’t do as well as I could have done in that class… but I just wasn’t that interested in the material! If my best friend’s boyfriend talked to her the way mine does, I’d tell her to dump that jerk… but this relationship is different! If I want to get faster, I need to tough out these final few intervals… but I just don’t feel like running anymore today!
As the May West quote goes, “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.” I have high hopes for my life; I think we all do. No one wants to look back and think, “Gee, I sure wasted my potential.” So perhaps this is a call to arms; a good reminder to take pride and step it up.
As far as I can tell we’re all capable of a lot. But as Kara makes it clear, if you want to accomplish great things, you’ve got to put in great effort.
